Hi there, we are conducting a quick questionnaire for our digital media tutorial today, would you mind answering four quick questions for us? The results of which will not be used for any research beyond our class today.
1) Have you heard of Citizen Journalism? (if not, briefly explain)
2) Have you ever heard of a newsworthy story through a social networking site, blog or forum before you saw it on television or heard it on the radio?
3) Have you ever written a citizen journalism piece on a social networking site, forum or blog? (Eg. Helping out or posting about someone in need of help in the Brisbane floods)
4) Have you ever written a home-made movie or music review on a social networking site, forum or blog? (eg. "I thought the movie The Godfather was really good!")
5) Have you ever heard something through a social networking site etc about a newsworthy story that you later found, through television or radio, wasn't correct?
6) Has this ever happened the other way around?

Treasure Hunt Week 5
1) According to John Houghton and Peter Sheehan, what are the two defining forces that are have caused the Knowledge Economy to emerge?
2) What does digital technology have to do with the Knowledge Economy? Refer to ‘A Primer on the Knowledge Economy’ for help.
3) How has knowledge become a commodity?
4) In Our Competitive Future: Building the Knowledge Driven Economy, compiled by the Department of Trade and Industry, they state,
"It is not simply about pushing back the frontiers of knowledge; it
is also about the more effective use and exploitation of all types
of knowledge in all manner of economic activity."
In Houghton and Sheenan, paraphrasing Working for the Future: Technology and Employment in the Global Knowledge Economy, they state,
"…it is important to note that the term ‘Knowledge Economy’ refers to the overall economic structure that is emerging, not to any one, or combination of these phenomena."
What do each of these quotes mean to you, and how do they relate to each other/what are the similarities?
5) What is the key defining feature of the Knowledge Economy, as opposed to other economies?
6) In The Economist, Takis Athanasopoulos describes the success of car manufacturer Toyota relying on their production line workers being knowledge workers. Why is it that this idea would initially be seen as a juxtaposition of conflicting ideas? And can you give some examples of what it would take to be, or what kind of ideas you would come up with, as a knowledge worker on a manufacturing production line?
7) “The majority of professionals and executives who took the survey indicated that their organizations will prepare proactively for the future by building scenarios and responses to emerging trends that could impact them. A significant number of organizations, however, are heading into the future much less prepared because they have no standard or consistent approach to detect and evaluate future impacts, or, worse, will likely wait until the trend becomes a distinct disruption and required focused recovery action.” (Holtshouse, p26). With this in mind, discuss knowledge workers in regards to the diffusion of innovation curve.

9) How did the KMWorld report propose to tackle the problem of retiring knowledge workers? Explain their strategy. Do you think this will work? Come up with one other potential way to solve this challenge.

Digital Media and Society week 3

Are you going to be a Changent?

I am working as a change agent in a Sri Lankan village, and I want to give these people their own voice through ICTs. Currently they live simply off the land but their crops are not sustainable and their food will run out, with many of their preferred foods being annual only growers or unsustainable meats. I want to spread the idea of sustainable agriculture, so that the people continue to have healthy crops into the future, and can make the most out of the amount of land that they have.
This is your mission. What do we do and how to we use ICTs to help this village? Imagine that currently there is no ICTs being used. PS. You don’t have to understand much about agriculture to do this in-class task.
Braintstorming starters:
What are some technologies that communicate information?
Could we build, from an abandoned house, a small community radio station that gives out information? But what does this building involve?
Should we take in video cameras and document our trials for the wider world?
What are the reasons that this village may not use ICTs?
Do we put books into their libraries? If so, do we need to teach any literacy skills? Do we need to employ book translators?

We want to turn an old building in Bhutan into a research site similar to those seen in Participatory Content Creation for Development: Principles and Practices. We have a budget of AU$1000.
What we can put in our research site and their prices are as follows,

You had looked off to the left over my head and who knows what you had seen
…You had looked off to the left over my head and who knows what you had seen.
When I met you the lanterns strung like well-plotted constellations above the roads were just that day being taken down again. They were kicked inside a wide-doored building where the paint peeled from the walls to three different colours, a palimpsest. The street narrowed where it was no longer the tourist strip and that is where I found you. I watched a small man with heavy lines in his palms scraping the hair off a dried out swine head with a small blade only meant for cutting paper. I turned and met you head on, both of us hearing the same cut-flesh noise. Feeling for my camera the man gestured to his other prize pig heads attached to the wooden pole behind you. The digital snap sounding more like an impatient pen. He returned to the shredding and looked out passed us as if we were never there, or have already gone. Perhaps we have.
